Urban Design & Planning

72% of our population lives in cities along our coastal margins. The last 20 years has seen a dramatic change to the way we enjoy our cities, with greater emphasis on dynamic waterfront and urban gathering spaces, walking and cycleway networks and the now-ubiquitous footpath cafe amenity. Frequently the needs of these spaces are shaped by urban entities such as the chamber of commerce, tourism and events management groups and the NZ Historic Places Trust working in tandem with City Councils. In recent years, EELA has been at the forefront of urban design and planning initiatives in Gisborne and Wairoa. Urban planning tools such as the MfE Urban Design Protocol and the Te Aranga Maori Landscape Strategy have been used to audit EELA’s design processes.
