The Wairoa District Council engaged EELA in this dual project which would seek a Notice of Requirement to re-align a small section of road at Opoutama and a Regional District Council consent to disperse wastewater into the road margins. In 2005, a small team of consultants including EELA, together with staff from Eastland Infrastructure Limited (EIL), undertook site visits and other preliminary investigations to complete the necessary technical reports for gaining the resource consent for EIL to construct a small wind farm comprising 4 to 6 wind turbines on a rural, hill site at Mokairau, approximately 30 kilometres north of Gisborne. The GDC considered two sites in relation to its proposal to develop a community wastewater scheme for the city of Gisborne. The first was a high-profile coastal site adjoining its current wastewater pumping station; the second and ultimately preferred site was located on the banks of the Taruheru Stream within the town’s industrial area. This site met with little opposition from the public and the proposal was consented in 2008, and commissioned in 2010. EELA advocated for eventual enhancement of the riparian boundary with native plantings and creating linkages with potential future city walkway strategies. [Read more...]
